Issue - v2000_01 Product Test Report: Premium Edge Adult Dog Food Premium Edge is made by Diamond Pet Foods, and it's probably the best food the company has ever done. The concept is simple: a premium pet food for less than other, comparable foods. The ingredients are simple, also: chicken meal and rice (brewers rice, brown rice, and rice flour), plus chicken fat, beet pulp, flax and egg, vitamins and minerals. The food is interesting because the main carbohydrate source is rice. There's no corn or wheat in the food, and no meat by-products. Premium Edge uses flax and fish meal to balance out the Omega-6 to Omega-3 fatty acid ratio at an excellent 6.25:1 (the lower the better!). For Katie, the food performed as expected for a Super-Premium I product. Stool volume was low, energy was good, skin and coat were good. Miss Chops was another story. The last food we tested reduced her nutritional status dramatically. Unfortunately, Premium Edge wasn't powerful enough to bring her back in shape. Her energy level continued to putter along, and, while things didn't get worse, they really didn't get better, either. In other words, Premium Edge maintained Chops at the same level where she started. What does that mean for your dog? Premium Edge is a good value, and a good maintenance food. But if your dog is a high energy dog, or if your dog is behind the eight ball nutritionally, don't expect miracles. For an everyday dog food for everyday dogs, I can recommend Premium Edge.
