It's the season for new dog foods! In addition to the revamping of the Iams product line (see article in this issue), there are plenty of new choices in dog foods; we'll look at 7 brand names and review.

Eagle Pack Senior Care Formula

Eagle Pack doesn't come out with many new products, so it's a real treat to try one of their new foods. Senior Care Formula includes maintenance levels of high-quality glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate for joint protection. There are higher levels of antioxidants for more protection and more vitamin A for better vision, plus FOS and probiotics for better digestion, sequestered trace minerals, and protein from three sources.

Nutro Natural Choice High Energy

Is your dog involved in strenuous activities such as herding and agility? This new high-powered food will provide the calories he needs. Made with chicken meal, rice, and lamb protein, High Energy is naturally-preserved with vitamin E, and supplemented with glucosamine and chondroitin.

Eukanuba Senior Maintenance

A great new formula, with all kinds of science-based goodies added makes this the one to beat in the Senior market. Glucosamine and chondroitin for joints, extra antioxidants (lutein for eyes, Vitamin E, beta carotene), just the right balance of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids, FOS for better digestion, and a unique combination of barley and sorghum as carbohydrates. The energy in these carbos is released slowly, so the blood glucose levels don't swing wildly. Also: L-carnitine to burn fat, and adjusted protein and fat levels.

Eukanuba Veterinary Diets Senior Plus

Like the new Eukanuba Senior, only more of all the goodies (except beta carotene). Chromium is added to help time insulin release, and borage oil for better coat. Sold by veterinarians only.

Steve's Real Food For Dogs

It's rare to see a truly new and different food. Steve Brown, creator of Charlee Bear Dog Treats, worked for 1-1/2 years with top nutritionists to formulate this complete and balanced raw food.

Steve's Real Food For Dogs comes in frozen or freeze-dried nuggets which are easy to store, pour, and measure. Dogs like eating them frozen, or defrosted. And the freeze-dried nuggests make an incredible treat.

Human-grade ingredients are used. Less than 5% of the formula is grain, the rest is meat, fruit and vegetables. Steve uses Foster Farms ground chicken, broccoli, romaine lettuce, carrots, cantaloupe, chicken liver, chicken gizzards, rice flour, cooked bone meal, omega-3, FOS, kelp, and chelated minerals.

Kibbles 'n Beefy Bits

What can we say? There's even a new Kibbles 'n Bits, made with "real beef."

Neura Wellness Diets

Old Mother Hubbard is redoing its Neura line of baked dog foods this fall, but meanwhile, they have a new line to compete with Innova: Neura Wellness™. These baked foods are made with human grade ingredients, including vegetables, fruits, meat and fish. It comes in a chicken version, a lamb version, a Senior, and a Fish & Sweet Potato formula. Call 1-800-225-0904 or visit www.oldmotherhubbard.com for details.
