Good Dog! News Service Jan. 15, 2000 The Iams Company will begin selling its Iams brand dog and cat food products in a variety of new places, beginning in the next months. In fact, you'll be able to find Iams pet foods just about everywhere that you can buy Tide detergent. That's because the new parent company of Iams, Procter and Gamble, is sending its sales reps on a mission to make Iams available everywhere P&G's are sold. That is likely to mean supermarket chains, mass merchandisers such as Wal-Mart, Kmart and Target, drug stores and warehouse clubs such as Costco and Sam's Club. The company's sales representatives are just beginning to contact potential retailers, so it's not clear which of these stores will actually carry Iams products or when. And there's no word yet on how this will affect prices of the Super-Premium brand. Ross Becker, Editor of trade publication Dog Industry Newsletter, said, "Over the last several years, the big question in the pet food industry has been 'Which will be the first Super-Premium brand to move into the mass market?' After Procter & Gamble bought Iams last fall, the answer to that question became clear. The next question was 'When?' Now we've heard the answer to that question. The question which remains, though, is how the competition will react." Iams spokespeople told Good Dog! that no changes are planned for product quality, only in distribution. The Eukanuba brand will continue to be sold only in pet specialty stores and veterinary offices. Good Dog! News Service Jan. 15, 2000 |
